Understanding USPS Package Tracking

USPS tracking gives you real-time visibility into where your package is during its journey from origin to destination. Whether you're waiting for an important delivery or monitoring a shipment you sent, knowing how to use USPS tracking effectively saves time and reduces anxiety.

Where to Find Your Tracking Number

Before you can track a package, you need a tracking number. Here's where to find it depending on how you shipped:

  • Post office receipt: Your tracking number is printed at the top of the receipt after you pay at the counter.
  • Shipping label: The number appears below the barcode on your printed label.
  • Email confirmation: If you purchased postage online (USPS.com, Stamps.com, etc.), the tracking number is in your confirmation email.
  • Online marketplace notifications: If you're a buyer on eBay, Etsy, or Amazon, the seller typically sends your tracking number via the platform's messaging system.

USPS tracking numbers are typically 20–22 digits long and may start with prefixes like "9400," "9205," or "9261" depending on the service used.

How to Track Your Package

There are several ways to check the status of a USPS shipment:

Method 1: USPS Website

  1. Go to usps.com
  2. Click on "Track a Package" in the top navigation
  3. Enter your tracking number and click "Track"
  4. View the full scan history and current status

Method 2: Text Message

Text your tracking number to 28777 (2USPS). USPS will reply with the latest status. You can also reply with "YES" to sign up for automatic updates.

Method 3: Email Notifications

On the tracking page, click "Get Email Updates" to receive automatic notifications for each scan event, including out-for-delivery and delivered alerts.

Method 4: USPS Mobile App

Download the official USPS Mobile app for iOS or Android. You can save tracking numbers, receive push notifications, and even manage mail holds.

What to Do When Tracking Stops Updating

It's common for tracking to go silent for a day or two, especially on weekends or during high-volume periods. However, if tracking hasn't updated for several days, here's what to do:

  • Wait 24–48 hours: Packages sometimes move through facilities without being scanned at every step.
  • Check for a delivery notice: A PS Form 3849 left in your mailbox means a delivery attempt was made.
  • Contact USPS Customer Service: Call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777) or use the online help request form.
  • File a Missing Mail Search: If your package is more than 7 days overdue, submit a Missing Mail search request at usps.com/help/missing-mail.
